The1.9 8v is prone to turbo complete failure and cam wear plus occasional injector issues, the 2.0 16 v is prone to turbo problems and major injector issues, both are prone to dual mass flywheel failure. On both the bottom end is strong.
idtry your best to go for a 1.9tdi. I have a mk5 sdi. o7 plate. i love my car. handles well, looks great. build quality is second to none, but i constantly find myself wishing i could overtake and accelerate more confidently. drove a 1.9 and although it wasnt fast, it wasnt slow, which the sdi just is. TSI- really can pick up its feet when you rev it, so power mostly at top end but when pottering around it's quite relaxed. TDI - power lower down in rev range, you really can feel the extra 100nm of torque. Doesn't need to be revved as hard. In general, just feels easier to get the performance out of the TDI. Forthe PD130, PD150, injectors with a 1.9 TDI will be suitable for 240bhp so on engines like the ALH with outputs of PD100, PD105 and PD115, injectors will need to be uprated to 170bhp. For an upgrade, you might use the PD150 injectors or look for any other high-performance options. Happily both the 2.0-litre FSI turbo petrol and the 2.0 HDI turbodiesel can take a lot of abuse, but you still need to be careful. Check that the petrol engine isn't noisy on start-up, because it
InGeneral the 2.0TDI engines go like this. 2.0 PD TDI is poor both regarding reliabilty and smoothness / noise compared with other manufacters CR engines from this era. 1.9 PD TDI is even less
